Unani Botanicals

"The ignorant physician heals few diseases with many medicines;
while the wise physician heals many diseases with few medicines."
--- An Eastern Sage

   The following is a list of 132 of the herbs commonly used in Unani Herbal Healing. The botanical and common English names are given for each herb. We hope to add additional information for each herb about its native home, properties, and uses. For specific instructions as to use, consult various ailments and sections in a Unani Formulary.

    This following list is by no means exhaustive. Hakim Ibn Sina includes 273 herbs in his Canon, and there exist Unani herbals giving data on several hundred more. A survey of Unani medicinal drugs by the Hamdard Institute of India lists some 655 drugs that are used in common by the Unani and Ayurvedic medicine systeems in lndia. Nonetheless the data provides an overview of some of the most important and useful botanicals. Most of them are available in the United States from various sources. Even most of those indigenous to India or Pakistan can be obtained through Indian stores in major cities such as New York or Chicago, or through the American Institute of Unani Traditional Medicine.

    For some of the herbs, more than one species is used, as is the case with rose and cumin, for example. You should try to obtain the highest-quality unadulterated herbal substances, grown in your locale, if possible--although sometimes only an imported herb fulfills these criteria, as with ginger.

    The great Hakims are known for their mastery of and ability to use a few herbs skillfully on a wide variety of ailments, rather than attempting to use a vast number of herbs on a few ailments.

* Indicates medicinal botanicals that require caution in use, as even small amounts may cause adverse reactions. Consult a physician or herbal expert before using.
